Engine oil does not wear out all at once: it loses viscosity, picks up particles and its additives are used up little by little. Changing it on time costs far less than the breakdown it prevents.
The interval depends on use: working hours, load, temperature and dust. The manufacturer’s data sheet is the starting point, and an analysis of the used oil tells you when it can be stretched.
